Five athletes from the Rio Grande Valley to play soccer at OLLU
The Houston Dynamo South Texas Soccer Academy anounced that five players from the South
Texas Academy team will be signing to play soccer at OLLU this fall. All five attend Rio Grande
Valley high schools. The academy was formed in September 2007 and is affiliated with the
Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer. Its goal is to identify and train youth players in the Rio
Grande Valley.
The academy is under the direction of Gary Hamilton, father of current OLLU soccer player Gary
Hamilton. He is a professional who played for Middlesbrough FC in the English First Division and
the Scottish National Youth Team. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, he became a professional at 17.
He played in 270 games in England's top-flight league, scoring 27 goals before injury forced his
retirement in 1992. Middlesbrough Football Club later voted him one of its top 50 players of the
past century.
Hamilton began directing McAllen's recreational league (McAllen Youth Soccer Association) and
coaching a competitive club (Border Bandits) in 1992. He has directed the Dynamo South Texas
Academy since 2007.
The five players who signed soccer scholarships on May 14 are:
Luis Mancilla, Hanna High School
Octavio Herrera, Harlingen High School
Aaron Acevedo, McAllen Memorial High School
Jesus Martinez, McAllen Memorial High School
Gerardo Marquez, Hanna High School
